Section A: The Pioneer & The Unbeatable Virtuoso |
Pioneer: James I. Lent recorded "The Ragtime Drummer" in 1904. Click here to listen to the MP3. This
record is a rarity indeed. It is a drum solo performed to ragtime rhythms.
It is the only example of an early ragtime drumming record. Lent is backed
up by the London Regimental Band. The sound quality is excellent for the
time it was recorded. The track retained its popularity for many years.
It still being re-released on different labels up to fifteen years after
it was initially recorded. Not just the only Lent record most people have
ever heard, but also the only drum solo they've come across on acoustic
records. |
Unbeatable Virtuoso: Bernard "Buddy" Rich (September 30, 1917 – April 2, 1987)
was an American jazz drummer and bandleader. Rich was billed as "the
world's greatest drummer" and was known for his virtuoso technique,
power, and speed. Rich's technique has been one of the most standardized
and coveted in drumming. His dexterity, speed and smooth execution are
considered "holy grails" of drum technique. |
